Keep These Strategies in Mind For Your Next Networking Event

Some people think that networking is a waste of time.

However, in actuality, research continues to show that careers and businesses are still being built and expanded as a result of professional relationships. People are continually hiring without posting job announcements widely (and sometimes are not posting job announcements at all), and people are still purchasing from business owners who they know, like, and trust. I honestly believe that one of my business coaching clients was able to more than 10x her revenues based on transforming her networking strategy through our coaching relationship, and I’ve definitely had career coaching clients who received their next opportunity as a result of the work we did to enhance their networking strategy.

Networking can provide you with a priceless opportunity to build relationships…if done well, and if not,… well, it can definitely feel like you’ve wasted gas and time that could have been spent doing something more productive.

Let me tell you why some of my clients and I have struggled with networking in the past, and then I’ll share a few strategies that can guide you towards maximizing the value of your time at your next networking event.

Here are some struggles that my clients and I have faced in networking that maybe you have experienced in the past:

  • Building great relationships at ongoing networking events, but not knowing how to transition those relationships to opportunities.
  • Spending too long speaking with someone where there is no feeling of connection, afraid to cut the conversation short.
  • Not speaking to anyone you don’t know at the networking event (It happens!).
  • Feeling out of place at a networking event, because the individuals there don’t connect to your career or business interests.
  • Attending a conference or other professional development opportunity in hopes of networking, and feeling like you’ve learned a lot, though you haven’t met very many people at all.

The list above has just a few networking “No Nos” and below, find some strategies to keep in mind to make your next networking event a “win” and not a “loss” for you:

  • Pre-Event Research – Should you attend?
    • Research the event, and find out if it’s truly a good fit for you to attend at all.
    • Ask yourself, “What are the top 3 most valuable results that I can get out of attending this event?”
    • Then ask yourself, “Why are those results so important to me?”
    • Most importantly, ask yourself, “How do I need to prepare to get those top 3 most valuable results?”
  • Pre-Event Research – Who will be at the networking event, and how will I connect with them?
    • If you can have a conversation with the event coordinator, do so before the event. Thank them for putting on the event, let them know you’re interested in attending the event, and also let them know that you want to make sure you take as much value as you can from attending. Ask about how many people might be attending the event, what industries they usually represent, what kinds of roles they usually have in those industries, if networking will be structured or unstructured, or any other kind of relevant question you might have. Prepare yourself emotionally to spend much of your time with individuals at the event that you don’t already know.
    • Then, research any specific individuals you know might be at the event that you want to meet. Develop a plan to connect with those specific individuals by the end of the event.
    • Prepare to arrive early and leave late. That’s when some of the most substantial relationships are made. This especially comes in handy at conferences or meetings where a lot of the content is structured. Arriving early and leaving late gives you much more time to go deeper in conversation with fellow attendees.
  • Strategize – Know how to start and end conversations.
    • Have a few conversation starters ready to avoid an awkward conversation. You can always ask someone where they’re from, where they work, why they came to the event, what they think about the event or other questions that are relevant. You can Google “networking conversation starters” and you’ll get some awesome ideas for how to start or carry on conversations.
    • If you’re not connecting very well with someone but have a limited time at the event to meet individuals, it might just be time to move on from that conversation. In that case, you may want to insert yourself and say something like, “I’m so sorry to interrupt, but I wanted to go over and say hello to someone, and I think they’re going to leave. It was really great meeting you.” Or you can make a statement that transitions well to a closing statement, such as, “How long do you think you’ll stay at the event this evening,” or “Do you have a busy week this week at work,” or anything that might be appropriate to say to lead into, “Well, it was really good meeting you. I hope you [enjoy the rest of the evening, or have a great time at this event, etc.]”
  • Strategize – Know how to transition conversations to results and opportunities.
    • If possible, you should definitely have a list of who you want to connect to when at the event. If you don’t have a specific list of who you want to connect with at an event, develop a specific number of people you’d like to connect to at the event. Then, develop a number of people you’d like to arrange a chat with outside of the networking event to get to know them more. If you can meet in person for coffee or lunch, that often works even better to build a substantial professional relationship.
    • If you’re looking for a job or looking for business, only transition to asking about those kinds of opportunities after you’ve developed a rapport with someone and feel like they have developed a positive impression of you.
    • If it’s appropriate, during a 1:1 conversation at the event or after the event, definitely ask the question, “Do you know who else I should speak to who [insert appropriate ask for advice or someone in a field you want to get into or a target market you want to connect with]?” This is how you can exponentially increase your network of relevant contacts, whether you’re asking about who else you should speak to at the event or who else you can connect to even beyond the event.

These are just a few substantial strategies that can work for individuals at all levels of career or business when it comes to truly maximize the value of your time networking. I hope they’re extremely helpful to you and anyone you might share this post with.

Four tips to make you a strong candidate for any job (even before you need one)


You may have heard this before, but I want to remind you that, “The best time to look for a job is when you don’t need one.”

Let me tell you why.

I’ve had my share of jobs. Before becoming an entrepreneur, I’ve managed to have jobs in project management, nonprofit management, education policy, teaching, public relations, news reporting, newspaper editing, and more. I always had either a full-time opportunity or one or more part-time opportunities while in between jobs.

I learned how to have income-security versus job security.

This is because in our work culture, not only is our generation more fearless to leave a job when it’s not a good fit, but the jobs we have aren’t always jobs we can stay at for a long time, even when we desire to. There have been jobs I’ve had where the whole company was dissolved unexpectedly, where a staff member came on who shifted the work culture so I no longer felt it was healthy to work there, where the company was about to fire everyone and re-hire those they wanted to invite back, or where the company shifted strategy, so I could continue on in the company, simply in a different role. I was often able to survive shifts in the companies I worked for, or was able to attain another opportunity (even attaining a $13k salary increase in the midst of the recession), or I happened to be moving to a different geographic location before a shift was made, although it’s still not a great feeling when you feel like your fate is in a company or individual’s hands.

So, if you’re going to work hard and give your all at your current job, and if you’re serious about wanting to build a legacy based on your career, you’ll want to make sure that you’re implementing the career-mastery strategies below even before it’s time for you to seek out employment in the future to make you the strongest candidate for any future position:

1) Update your resume now. Make sure your resume is not only professional and up-to-date, but impressive! Your resume should evoke a positive response when even you read it. Some of my most capable and gifted clients often utilize a lot of my support in strengthening their resumes to make them more achievement oriented. Do this now before it’s pressing.

2) Brush up on your interview skills now. If you feel that you’re not the strongest interviewer (and all of us can do better), definitely find resources to enhance these skills before you need to use them. One of my previous clients just landed her dream job, living in one major city while working remotely at a job in another major city in a brand new career field. Hours of us doing interview role-plays while working on her areas for growth in interviewing were key in her transition. Another client landed her first senior position in a brand new career sector after in-depth interviewing practice with me as well. Interviewing well is key not only to be a good fit for your next job, but to also be able to speak strongly about your brand. Determine what you can do to strengthen this critical skill.

3) Identify what your next dream transition would be. The sky is the limit for what kind of job you can pursue next. Really take some time to explore your previous work experience, your strengths, your weaknesses, and even your life’s mission, whether that’s pursuing financial freedom for your family or influencing international policy, for example. One of the most powerful things I do with some of my clients is to spend time digging deep to explore what their personal and professional mission and values are. It clarifies what matters as they decide what opportunities to pursue next. Check out job listings, determine which are of most interest to you, and really spend some time reflecting on what you desire that’s in alignment with what you really want before you feel pressured to get a job simply to fulfill financial obligations.

4) Network! If you’re planning to be considered a valuable prospective employee or if you plan to be considered for a senior position in the future, it will be critical for key players within your organization and within other organizations to know who you are and know the value of the work you bring to the table. If you’re in a city that has regularly occurring networking, make it a point to attend networking events regularly (even if that means you’re attending once every few months) and form substantial personal and professional relationships while there. Many new positions are not listed within companies, and a substantial amount of positions are filled through networking. If you’re hesitant about networking, know it’s possible to break through your networking challenges to be an expert networker. I’ve seen it happen for a number of my clients who worked with me to master the art of networking through our video calls or in-person at events. You too can work to start to or continue to master the art of networking and make it work for you!

A Few of the Myths and Realities of Entrepreneurship (From My Perspective!)


Entrepreneurship has been such a blessing to me, even as others still believe it always turns out badly.

Some believe that being an entrepreneur is the wrong move to make because:

  • You’ll mess up your credit score.
  • You won’t be able to make big purchases, like purchasing a home or car.
  • You won’t be able to afford health insurance.
  • You won’t be able to provide for your family.
  • You’ll waste the educational credentials that you spent so much time and energy getting.

I’ve actually found the opposite to be true for me. I’ve strived to be strategic, disciplined, and consistent throughout the 4 years that I’ve been a Leadership and Business Coach, and in full transparency:

✔ My credit score has remained consistently above 800.

✔ We have two homes and are looking to purchase our 3rd property by early next year. My over $40k in student loans is completely paid off.

✔ I’ve been able to afford health insurance or healthcare since I started my business.

✔ I work 20 – 25 hours a week, and had my revenues hit double my husband’s income this year. My two small children stay home with me even as I work with a nanny we’ve hired to watch them.

✔ I have two degrees, including one from an Ivy League University along with certifications in group facilitation and Life Coaching. I totally don’t think any of it was a waste of time, though I also believe we all have different educational paths and we all have value no matter what that educational path looked like. For me, the network and mastery I’ve gained through the schools I attended have added value to those I serve and has allowed me to serve many colleagues I’ve met while obtaining those degrees!

✔ And above all, though entrepreneurship has its challenges, I really and truly love what I do every day, I love my clients, and I’m truly blessed!

If you’re willing to be strategic, disciplined, and consistent, the sky is the limit for you personally, professionally, and entrepreneurially.

One of my good friends often says jokingly, “Daph, I’m about to throw in the towel.” He’s trying to say that he might as well give up when the stress of life gets to be a little too much. And I often tell him, “Nope. Pick it back up!” He laughs at me, but I know that he appreciates me saying it every time I do! We have to keep moving forward steadily towards all of the potential that life has to offer!
Many of us have so much potential and power inside of us, and it simply takes for us to believe in that daily to push forward towards our goals, to embrace hope and potential within each day, and to pursue opportunities, friendships, and relationships that would allow us to be inspired, empowered, and fulfilled.

So go for it! Don’t you try to throw in the towel. Instead, live your life so that every day, you have a testimony to tell! Have a success mentality even in the midst of the storm. Live today like it’s part of your story of overcoming and winning even amidst the challenges that come your way! Live today like it’s part of the legacy that you might pass on to your mentees, the people around you, or your future family! You deserve to embrace all that life has to offer today and every day!

Here’s a plan to help you accomplish major goals in 2018!


You know what?

Sometimes, I think that we focus so much on New Year’s Resolutions that we miss out on the great opportunity that we have in the present to accomplish our vision.

With this being the last quarter of this year, I challenge you to determine what are the top three goals that you can commit to accomplishing this year that are realistic, yet extremely impactful, that fit within your current time constraints to accomplish.

**I would strongly urge you to take about 30 minutes to 1 hour to do the exercise below, or something similar, within the next 2 weeks so that you can work towards making major forward movement in the areas of life that you value the most.

Here’s how you can go about planning for and implementing your top three goals for this last quarter of 2018.

1) Firstly, think about what aspect of your life you’d like to focus on when it comes to any one of your goals. Family life? Personal development? Mindset? Finances? Fun? Spirituality? Career? Friendship? Relationship? These are just a few categories to get your wheels turning.

2) Then, think of a timeframe that is feasible for you to be able to implement these critical goals in. Maybe for you, focusing on a goal that can be implemented in 2 hours or 1 day or 1 week or 10 days would be best for you. Time-limited goals where we commit to deadlines or routines within a restricted amount of time often give us the momentum we need to implement them.

3) For each goal, write a list of every single thing that needs to happen in order for you to be able to accomplish that goal.

4) Address the challenges that might come up for you. Write a list of any emotional, physical, or logistical obstacle that might come in the way of you accomplishing the goal. For every “obstacle thought,” write a new thought and an action that could combat that obstacle thought.

5) Lastly, schedule in all of the small action steps from #3 and #4 in your calendar, and make your goal happen!

Three ways to increase sales for new and repeat business

One of the questions established business owners often ask themselves is, “What are small, but substantial tweaks that I can make to my sales process to increase sales?”

Here are a few strategies that might help! Let’s call them, “The Three R’s.” Once I started to implement these small strategies in my business more, I definitely noticed an increase in leads that converted to sales, whether those leads came from new or repeat business.

1) Recap

As soon as possible, and definitely within 24 hours after a sales call or sales meeting(if that time-frame is possible within your industry), send an email to recap what you spoke about in your sales conversation and include any estimate or proposal as well if you usually send that to prospects. I used to wait 1 or 2 weeks to send this recap email, because I didn’t prioritize it. Once I did prioritize it, my conversion rates skyrocketed! One of my Business Accountability Coaching clients also credited her revenues growing by 5x partly to drastically decreasing the amount of time it took her to provide quotes to her prospects. The psychology of sales is that people are more likely to take action when their interest and excitement about your product is at it’s highest–during or soon after a sales conversation. If you know that your product or service would truly be a blessing to your prospect, share that recap email with the prospect while your product or service is still a hot topic, even if you’ve already closed the sale within the sales conversation.

PRO TIP: If it’s possible, draft the email you’ll be sending the prospect after your sales call at some point before your sales call and schedule the time for when you’ll be sending your recap email before you have the sales conversation, so that recap email is definitely sent within 24 hours after the sales conversation. If you do in-person sales meetings, you can even complete and send your sales email before you even get home, stopping somewhere to work after you get just a few blocks away from the prospect (Do this especially if you feel like you get caught up in other priorities once you get home or to your office).

2) Resources

Every client acquisition phase is different, but you might be able to shorten the timeline of someone becoming your client to 3 months after you talk versus 7 months or to 1 year after you talk versus 3 years by sending that prospect resources that might be helpful for them from what you know about the prospect. Some examples of resources are:

  • a link to an event that might be of interest to them
  • connecting them to a contact that might be helpful for them
  • a book
  • an email, text, or call with a thought you had about a challenge they might be experiencing
  • “serve calls” instead of “sales calls” where you simply call to check in, see how things are going, and offer quick encouragement or advice

Your being in service to your prospects (including previous customers) will not only keep you top-of-mind for that individual for when they’re thinking about using your service, but also will keep you top-of-mind for prospective referrals they might send your way, and it’s an added benefit that you get to be a blessing to that individual in the process.

PRO TIP: The greatest business people know that people buy from who they trust, know, and like. Great customer service when you’re serving your clients also contributes to repeat business and referrals (and makes you an awesome social change agent if you’re like me, trying to make a positive impact on the world around you!).

3) Remembering

Find ways to remember those things that are significant to your prospect that they share with you. Think beyond birthdays to things that they mention are important to them like: weddings, baby births, graduations, trips, birthdays of those they love, big events happening in their business, and more. You can include content about a personal interest or anecdote from your conversation with the prospect in your recap email, but also reach out to your prospect long after your sales conversation to let them know that you’re thinking of them when it comes to the things they’ve mentioned to you are important to them. There have definitely been times when I have reached out to individuals with resources or to show them I’m thinking of them and in addition to showing genuine care for the individual, have also gained a client in the process. PRO TIP: You could even send something in the mail or via email that shows care, acknowledgment, encouragement, or thoughtfulness. Some simple yet meaningful examples of this are:

  • greeting cards
  • business card holder for a college graduate in their family
  • suitcase tag
  • flowers

I hope you see from above the trend of great sales strategies also allowing you to really be a blessing to your prospects whether they choose to work with you or not. Great business strategies are often also in alignment with simply being amazing to the people you serve.

What really makes a business successful?

If you’ve been following me long enough, then you know that when I first started my business, after I thought I was in for a huge, successful launch my first month in business, I brought in just $75 a month for my first few months of being in business. Years later, my monthly revenues are on average above the industry average for coaches, and I had up to 38 clients the month before I recently went on maternity leave.

I have spent a great deal of time really trying to determine what I did to get here. What had I done to become a successful entrepreneur when 90% of new businesses fail?

One thing that I’ve realized with my business coaching clients is that an individual first has to have a great product or service that people definitely want to purchase. More often than you think, the biggest challenge for clients can come when they realize that what they believe is a great product or service actually is not something that their target market would purchase. Another commonality for successful businesses is the ability to market and sell that great product or service. Sometimes an individual has a great product or service but has no idea how to get it in the hands of those people who might invest in that product or service.

In addition to having a great offering and knowing how to get it into the hands of those who desire it, so that I can always be improving how I serve, mentor, and coach my business clients, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring what other components are essential for a business to flourish. Here is what I came up with, especially when it comes to solopreneurs, who are, at least for now, the sole employees of their businesses.

In my experience, a successful solopreneur has to have:

  • a clearly defined target market, urgent need, and results;
  • the proper elements of a powerful business pitch;
  • a solid grasp on how to efficiently organize time and coordinate administrative tasks;
  • an understanding of business compliance;
  • the ability to package products and services well;
  • clear, unique sales proposition–what makes you stand apart from your competition;
  • effective marketing tools and strategy for consistent business growth;
  • firm understanding of foundational sales principles;
  • the ability to close sales;
  • “success mindset” that allows for pushing past fear and confidently taking risks;
  • and amazing customer service.

That seems like a lot, right?

But it’s all really feasible to integrate into your repertoire if you commit yourself to consistent professional development, training, reading, networking, and mentorship as you move forward in your business journey.

We have to watch what we’re sowing: Creating a roadmap for personal and professional success

Years ago, I sat at a dinner table with fellow young professionals who were high-achievers, and we began to share about challenges that we had experienced throughout our respective journeys. People at that table spoke about such things as confidence challenges, family issues, loneliness, and even dealing with addiction or suicide when it came to family members or friends. Through all of this, these individuals managed to be doing great work within their communities and careers. That which was happening in their hearts and minds was impacting them, even as they were achieving. Something I came away from that conversation with, was that we need to watch what we’re sowing as we pursue our vision and goals, because often, we’re unconsciously reaping what we sow. 

The bible says, “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully (2 Corinthians 9:6),” and I wholeheartedly believe that to be true. As someone who has always focused on both achieving and serving, when I was most experiencing challenges with confidence and fear, I wasn’t able to do my greatest work. I avoided speaking to wonderful people who intimidated me, I didn’t take advantage of certain opportunities, and I feared judgment. I was sowing fear and reaping missed opportunities. When I didn’t have a great handle on my direction, I didn’t accomplish as much. When I realized where I wanted to go in terms of my vision, I began sowing seeds of financial abundance, career progression, and entrepreneurship that all reaped greatly. And once I understood how to truly be organized and energized daily, things got even better in my life both personally and professionally.

What are you sowing?

Whatever your answer is, we all should continuously be working to push past personal and career challenges that might be preventing us from reaching our fullest potential. 

There’s always so much more we can do to truly live out our greatness, and it is an honorable endeavor to take the time to identify what we need to live the lives we’ve dreamed of.

  • One monthly group webinar (1.5 – 2 hours each) where you’ll have the opportunity to work through these critical components of Release, Resilience, Energy, Action, Productivity, and Progress through conversation, group support, an interactive curriculum including proven and research-based exercises, worksheets, and journaling.
  • One monthly one-on-one coaching session (1 hour each) via Skype, phone, or in-person with you and I (a certified life coach) where we delve deeper and/or strategize around areas of most concern to you, coming up with strategic plans of action.
  • Personalized HW from 1:1 calls and group webinars to ensure you’re steadily moving forward with your personal dreams and goals while analyzing your current state of mind and empowering yourself along the way.
