What really makes a business successful?

If you’ve been following me long enough, then you know that when I first started my business, after I thought I was in for a huge, successful launch my first month in business, I brought in just $75 a month for my first few months of being in business. Years later, my monthly revenues are on average above the industry average for coaches, and I had up to 38 clients the month before I recently went on maternity leave.

I have spent a great deal of time really trying to determine what I did to get here. What had I done to become a successful entrepreneur when 90% of new businesses fail?

One thing that I’ve realized with my business coaching clients is that an individual first has to have a great product or service that people definitely want to purchase. More often than you think, the biggest challenge for clients can come when they realize that what they believe is a great product or service actually is not something that their target market would purchase. Another commonality for successful businesses is the ability to market and sell that great product or service. Sometimes an individual has a great product or service but has no idea how to get it in the hands of those people who might invest in that product or service.

In addition to having a great offering and knowing how to get it into the hands of those who desire it, so that I can always be improving how I serve, mentor, and coach my business clients, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring what other components are essential for a business to flourish. Here is what I came up with, especially when it comes to solopreneurs, who are, at least for now, the sole employees of their businesses.

In my experience, a successful solopreneur has to have:

  • a clearly defined target market, urgent need, and results;
  • the proper elements of a powerful business pitch;
  • a solid grasp on how to efficiently organize time and coordinate administrative tasks;
  • an understanding of business compliance;
  • the ability to package products and services well;
  • clear, unique sales proposition–what makes you stand apart from your competition;
  • effective marketing tools and strategy for consistent business growth;
  • firm understanding of foundational sales principles;
  • the ability to close sales;
  • “success mindset” that allows for pushing past fear and confidently taking risks;
  • and amazing customer service.

That seems like a lot, right?

But it’s all really feasible to integrate into your repertoire if you commit yourself to consistent professional development, training, reading, networking, and mentorship as you move forward in your business journey.

Last week, I wrote to you about a resource to help you develop personally, and this week, I want to let you know I also have a resource I’m launching in September for entrepreneurs looking to gain practical tools to move their businesses forward. It’s my Clarity – Cash Flow – Confidence Group Business Coaching Program, where you’ll get group coaching and one-on-one coaching to support you in moving forward towards your business goals over our 6 months of working together. We have to watch what we’re sowing: Creating a roadmap for personal and professional success

Years ago, I sat at a dinner table with fellow young professionals who were high-achievers, and we began to share about challenges that we had experienced throughout our respective journeys. People at that table spoke about such things as confidence challenges, family issues, loneliness, and even dealing with addiction or suicide when it came to family members or friends. Through all of this, these individuals managed to be doing great work within their communities and careers. That which was happening in their hearts and minds was impacting them, even as they were achieving. Something I came away from that conversation with, was that we need to watch what we’re sowing as we pursue our vision and goals, because often, we’re unconsciously reaping what we sow.

The bible says, “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully (2 Corinthians 9:6),” and I wholeheartedly believe that to be true. As someone who has always focused on both achieving and serving, when I was most experiencing challenges with confidence and fear, I wasn’t able to do my greatest work. I avoided speaking to wonderful people who intimidated me, I didn’t take advantage of certain opportunities, and I feared judgment. I was sowing fear and reaping missed opportunities. When I didn’t have a great handle on my direction, I didn’t accomplish as much. When I realized where I wanted to go in terms of my vision, I began sowing seeds of financial abundance, career progression, and entrepreneurship that all reaped greatly. And once I understood how to truly be organized and energized daily, things got even better in my life both personally and professionally.

What are you sowing?

Whatever your answer is, we all should continuously be working to push past personal and career challenges that might be preventing us from reaching our fullest potential.

There’s always so much more we can do to truly live out our greatness, and it is an honorable endeavor to take the time to identify what we need to live the lives we’ve dreamed of.

I challenge you to both identify and implement what you need to sow more of in your life, so that you can reap the fruit that comes from an empowering pursuit of your personal and professional vision.

If you’re looking for a resource to support your forward movement towards your vision, I’m launching a 6-month program specifically designed to equip visionaries with research-driven tools for personal and professional success starting this August 2018. I designed it with my experiences, best practices from experts in areas of personal and professional success, and the experiences of my colleagues in mind, considering the question, “What does it truly take to be successful both personally and professionally, and what strategies and tools would contribute in a powerful way to the lives of others?” If this sounds like it might interest you, check out more information about this program below or by clicking here.

This program is for you if:

  • You feel like you need to work on your ability to bounce back from situations that have happened in the past or situations currently happening in your home, at work, in relationships, in friendships, or within your entrepreneurial plans (Resilience),
  • You can’t always find the emotional, physical or spiritual energy you need to move forward in a spirit of joy and excellence daily and want to know the secrets toliving an energetic life (Energy),
  • You’d like to be able to have more initiative when it comes to your daily routine, being able to more readily avoid procrastination, adhering to your commitments, confronting challenges, and pursuing your dreams head on (Action),
  • You have been seeking the right routine that will allow you to maximize your personal time, family time, entrepreneurial time, relational time, etc. (Productivity), AND
  • You’d like to work on the critical aspects of releasing feelings about the past that are not serving you and move forward into strategizing in detail what the future might look like and the path to get there (Release and Progress).

Seats are limited to the first 8 registrants, and this program starts August 2018. Sign up for a 15-minute chat with me, where I can learn more about your personal and professional goals and tell you about next steps to register if you’re a good fit for this program!

  • One monthly one-on-one coaching session (1 hour each) via Skype, phone, or in-person with you and I (a certified life coach) where we delve deeper and/or strategize around areas of most concern to you, coming up with strategic plans of action.
  • Personalized HW from 1:1 calls and group webinars to ensure you’re steadily moving forward with your personal dreams and goals while analyzing your current state of mind and empowering yourself along the way.

Past participants have experienced varying results, which include:

Coming soon – My 2nd child! + My latest business wins!

To all of my wonderful supporters and followers,

I just wanted to keep you in the loop that my 2nd child will be on the way over the next few weeks, and on top of that, I’m moving from Miami to West Palm Beach, FL towards the end of this month (I know–lots of changes)!!!And what a wonderful ride this pregnancy has been in regards to the blessings that have been happening in my business in the midst of my pregnancy.

Check out some of the business wins that I’ve experienced over the past 9 months:

1) I have increased my monthly revenues to twice as much as they were before Jasmine was born;

2) I have had up to 38 clients at one time, experiencing having a full load of clients for the first time in my business, where for the first time, I had to delay client start dates, pushing new client start dates to after I come back from maternity leave in June; and

3) I have been getting the most consistent, paid inquiries for speaking engagements that I’ve gotten in the life of my business, with paid speaking opportunities to fly out to North Carolina this month and another city in Central Florida next month along with a paid speaking engagement just two days prior to my due date (all that I had to turn down as a result of where I am in my pregnancy, but all that I am extremely grateful for receiving).

I also wanted to loop you in about a few upcoming changes as a result of my maternity leave and second child coming. While I’m committed to the same great work as your leadership and business empowerment specialist even in the midst of my transition, here are some changes that you can expect:

1) I’ll be on maternity leave from 4/30 through 6/16, so this might be one of the last emails you receive leading up to that timeframe until after 6/16;

2) I’ll be moving to hopefully distributing one email newsletter per month after maternity leave and posting Facebook Lives either once a month or once every other month, with my having greater responsibilities outside of work; and

3) I’ll be responding to emails, calls, and texts in a limited fashion during my maternity leave (but still feel free to reach out!).

I know that God is doing an awesome work in my life and business, even in the midst of challenges that might come my way, and I’m confident that he’s doing a great work in your life as well!

Please send your prayers and thoughts my way as I prepare to move into this next wonderful phase of my life. 🙂

Onwards and upwards,

Your leadership and business empowerment specialist,
Daphne L. Valcin

VIDEO: Tips to determine if your next job or entrepreneurial opportunity is right for you – Why I turned down a million-dollar opportunity

Million-dollar opportunitityButton

Here is the recording from the Facebook Live that I did a few weeks ago that has almost 1,000 views thus far on Facebook: “Why I Turned Down a Million Dollar Opportunity: A Few Tips to Determine Whether the Next Job or Entrepreneurial Opportunity is Right For You.”

For those of you who prefer to read a bit of the content-rich detail of what I spoke about, here’s the basic outline of what I covered in this video:

I started out by speaking about the journey of a gentleman who happens to be a senior in age who I spoke to after a goal-setting workshop that I facilitated for him and a few other individuals. After the workshop, he shared with me the significance of him making the right decisions about what to prioritize as his life focus. He felt as if this was extremely critical with these possibly being the last years of his life. His story made me think about why we don’t all have the perspective of living our best lives now, especially since, whether we would like to admit it or not, none of us are guaranteed many years of life from this point forward (though I hope we all have an abundance of years moving forward!).

I then went on to give a few major tips on how to determine if your next job or entrepreneurial opportunity is right for you. Here are a few things I covered that we should all think about when it comes to our next opportunities:

1) What do you want from this season in your life?
More time with family?
More balance?
More of a focus on building wealth?/ Paying off debt?
More time?
Action: Write it down – What do you want and why in every area of your life? Does your dream or opportunity currently fit into these desires?

2) What might others feel like they need from you in this season?
What might your spouse or family desire from you?
What is your child or husband’s love language, and are you able to fulfill that love language while pursuing a specific opportunity?
Do you have a sick parent or family member that you need to take care of while pursuing your next opportunity?
Is there debt that needs to be paid off in your family that you need to address as soon as possible?
Action: Talk to your loved ones before making huge decisions. Have your dream team on board to support you through your dream.

3) Is what you want entrepreneurship or a job?
Are you okay with uncertainty or do you need guaranteed profit?
Are you okay with experiencing failure on occasion that might impact your income or do you need definite additional income?
Action: If you desire to take risks with your next job or entrepreneurial opportunity, take risks at the best possible time. Maybe that means that you take the risk now while you have a full-time job, are single, or have guaranteed retirement. Maybe that time is in the future. If the time is now to take a risk, what will you do to start working towards making that dream happen?

4) Think about if an opportunity will truly make you happy doing the task that you’ll be doing, and if that happiness in doing your work truly matters to you (maybe profitability matters more to you when you explore your heart deeply).
Does happiness matter more than the profit you’ll be making in your next opportunity?
Did you find that you have a degree but are not choosing to do the thing that will bring you wealth? Maybe it’s because happiness in what you’re doing might matter more to you than profit.
If you’re currently in school, do you find that you’re not pursuing a major or degree of study that might not bring you wealth?
Answer the question: Might your happiness be more important than your wealth?
Action: Write down the experiences you’ve had that have truly made you happy.

5) Think about if you’re honestly satisfied with the status quo (you just might be).
Is outside pressure or popularity forcing you to feel like you need to be wealthy?
Action: Pray, meditate, and determine what you want and why? What do you like about how things are going now? Do you honestly want to change?

After evaluating the above, you should have a number of strategies and tools to feel more confident that your next entrepreneurial or job opportunity is right for you!

She Paid Off $20,000 Of Debt In 5 Months

Do you know how it feels to pay off $20k of debt in 5 months? It feels absolutely amazing, and that is exactly what happened to one of my business coaching clients as a result of our coaching relationship. This client was just re-launching her business after our first coaching session. The other day, she texted me stating that she had paid down $20,000 of debt in just 5 months as a result of the work that we’re doing together. I was ecstatic!

So, I know what you’re thinking. What exactly does this have to do with me? Well, let me tell you that no matter if you’re coaching with me or not, that if you put in work towards your vision, if you’re super strategic about your approach, and if you persevere even when it’s not easy, that you might just experience the results you’ve been dreaming of, whether personally or professionally. For some people, those results come very quickly, and for others, it takes time, but research shows that perseverance and grit are the most common attributes of those who are successful.

My client, who’s now on track for working towards paying off her house (that she recently bought), not only is always hungry for knowledge, but she has a huge focus on mastering her craft when it comes to the service that she provides. Both personally and professionally, she definitely has the perseverance and grit that research cites as being critical for success, and even when things aren’t going perfectly in life or business, she is honest with herself about what’s wrong and pushes forward towards a resolution to do better or be better. And you know what? You don’t have to be exactly like my client, but your character, values, and approach to hard work will be super important on your life’s journey.

Practice daily the values that you know will get you to where you want to go in every area of your life, and prayerfully, you will see the fruit that produces over time!

I’m rooting for you!

Schedule “you” time and “dream” time this holiday season

Holiday vacation is right around the corner, and that means that my birthday just passed! It was December 2, and can I tell you, I had a blast, BUT I didn’t take enough time out to do things for me that day, and two weeks later, I’m still striving to make time to get a pedicure—something I do for myself just once or twice a year.

You see, I’m realizing that I need to schedule more “me” time into my calendar to be renewed and to fill my cup so that I can serve others from my overflow. For me, that means bike riding, making fresh tea, getting my nails done, full-blown dance sessions in the house, and watching the cooking channel occasionally among other things that make me feel refreshed. I’m guessing you might be able to use some more “me” time too.  I’m making a commitment to making more “me” time happen during the holiday season when things slow down a bit, and I’m hoping you make the same commitment. Why not go into 2018 feeling rested and relaxed?

Alternatively, if you’re feeling behind when it comes to laying the foundation for any dreams you might have—whether it’s a course you’ve fallen behind on, a business plan you have yet to complete, or a project you’ve been procrastinating on, make some “dream” time happen for yourself during this holiday break as well. I created my business plan, concept paper, budget, and goals for one of my businesses during one holiday season, simply by being strategic with my time.

While you’re in the mode of serving others and reflecting on the reason for the season, go ahead and schedule in some “you” time and some “dream” time if either or both of those things are important to you. For some of my readers, this holiday break presents a rare opportunity to have a true break, which makes it even more important to maximize this time to feel refreshed after the break has ended.

Whatever you decide to do with your time this season be intentional, be encouraged, be blessed, and be renewed. I’m sending many blessings your way this holiday season and beyond.

And remember, I believe in you!

What one accomplishment would make your 2017 amazing?

eric-rothermel-Planner

I can remember walking with an open laptop on my college campus as an undergrad, getting some last minute studying done right before an exam. A gentleman, who I believe was a professor, walked by me and told me, “If you don’t know it by now, you just won’t know it.” He then kept walking past me. He must have seen the intensity in my eyes and knew my test was right around the corner. But you know what? I kept studying, and I’m pretty sure I did well on that exam. I’m an awesome test taker, but I’m often the person who has my study book and notes out until the teacher or proctor says to put it away.  It’s because of my core belief that every moment counts–a belief I still apply to life and business. And when it comes to your 2017, there’s still time to end this year with a bang.

One of my clients inspired this post. She has health, financial, and other goals that she’s determined to meet before the end of 2017, and she’s on track to achieve themInstead of already delivering your final conclusions on 2017 already, why not do something you can really be proud of before December 31 comes.

I want you to do me a big favor. Please think of at least 1 goal that is realistic for you to accomplish over the next few weeks that would make you feel absolutely amazing about closing out 2017. Whether it’s about your physical health, self-care, finances, relationship, friendship, professional development, or something else, I want you to zoom in on that 1 goal. Then, I want you to think about the top 3 things you must do in order to make that goal happen. Then, create a timeline for implementation, schedule any associated action steps in your calendar, and make it happen!

If you really want to make your 2017 amazing, you definitely can, so hop to it 🙂 Be encouraged, and continue to be equipped for the greatness that is coming your way.

And remember, I believe in you!

The Greatest Benefits of Coworking for Entrepreneurs

 Check out this post by guest blogger and content marketer, Catherine Park.

The Greatest Benefits of Coworking for Entrepreneurs

As an entrepreneur, you’ll find that one of your greatest challenges comes in the form of motivation or lack thereof. When working from home, a lot of the time it can be quite frustrating to try to stay motivated. That is why coworking has become such a popular alternative today. Coworking spaces are work areas where you can go regularly to sit down and work in the company of like-minded people. Through coworking, you are creating an office-like environment without the huge overhead costs of renting an actual office. Coworking spaces are becoming quite common around the world.

One important fact that’s worth noting is coworking is not for everyone. Some people are more comfortable working from home and are self-motivated enough to be productive. With that in mind, this post is going to assume that you’re not one of those people, so let’s look at some of the advantages of coworking.

It Keeps Home and Work Separate

There is no real accountability when working from home. Sure, you have clients who set deadlines for the work that you produce for them, but that’s it. It’s just too easy to get distracted – television, the fridge, even all of those family-related chores can present a constant problem. The ability to separate home and work is important for most of us because it allows us to be more productive in both environments. Coworking gives you the ability to get out of the house and get some much-needed fresh air.

Coworking Boosts your Effectiveness

Research has been performed by numerous individuals and organizations, and they all support the fact that coworking boosts productivity. It promotes a shift in energy and mindset, creating an environment where you can be more productive. According to the research, interactions with other like-minded people can lead to a natural sense of accountability. You can also accomplish having a shift in energy, mindset, and productivity by renting an office space, but the overhead is extremely high. Coworking spaces are much more budget-friendly so that it can boost your effectiveness in more ways than one.

Be Inspired by Like-Minded People

Working alone can quickly cause you to become isolated. Isolation dramatically affects your mood. The idea is to surround yourself with other people, and more importantly, to surround yourself with like-minded people, even when you’re working for yourself. Coworking can inspire you in ways that are simply not possible when working alone.

Build and Grow your Network

Coworking spaces are a great place to make connections that are relevant to your business. Even as you might be collaborating with a virtual team to run your business, with coworking, suppliers, business partners, and potential clients might be sharing the space with you, providing wonderful networking opportunities. Furthermore, connections that you make in networking spaces tend to be of a much higher quality that those you might meet online.

Forces You to Take your Business Seriously

As you probably know, working from home doesn’t mean that you get to work in your jammies – contrary to what many “work from home” programs might teach you. If you want to be successful, then you have to find ways to separate home from work. For some of us, forcing that separation is necessary. Coworking is one of the absolute best ways to do that. It can likely automatically boost your productivity because it signals to your mind that it’s time to work.
