A Few of the Myths and Realities of Entrepreneurship (From My Perspective!)

DaphneLookingUp

Entrepreneurship has been such a blessing to me, even as others still believe it always turns out badly.

Some believe that being an entrepreneur is the wrong move to make because:

  • You’ll mess up your credit score.
  • You won’t be able to make big purchases, like purchasing a home or car.
  • You won’t be able to afford health insurance.
  • You won’t be able to provide for your family.
  • You’ll waste the educational credentials that you spent so much time and energy getting.

I’ve actually found the opposite to be true for me. I’ve strived to be strategic, disciplined, and consistent throughout the 4 years that I’ve been a Leadership and Business Coach, and in full transparency:

✔ My credit score has remained consistently above 800.

✔ We have two homes and are looking to purchase our 3rd property by early next year. My over $40k in student loans is completely paid off.

✔ I’ve been able to afford health insurance or healthcare since I started my business.

✔ I work 20 – 25 hours a week, and had my revenues hit double my husband’s income this year. My two small children stay home with me even as I work with a nanny we’ve hired to watch them.

✔ I have two degrees, including one from an Ivy League University along with certifications in group facilitation and Life Coaching. I totally don’t think any of it was a waste of time, though I also believe we all have different educational paths and we all have value no matter what that educational path looked like. For me, the network and mastery I’ve gained through the schools I attended have added value to those I serve and has allowed me to serve many colleagues I’ve met while obtaining those degrees!

✔ And above all, though entrepreneurship has its challenges, I really and truly love what I do every day, I love my clients, and I’m truly blessed!

If you’re willing to be strategic, disciplined, and consistent, the sky is the limit for you personally, professionally, and entrepreneurially.

And I’m on a mission to share the wealth of knowledge I’ve gained with other entrepreneurs looking to thrive in 2019.

Live your life, so that every day, you have a testimony to tell

Have a testimony

One of my good friends often says jokingly, “Daph, I’m about to throw in the towel.” He’s trying to say that he might as well give up when the stress of life gets to be a little too much. And I often tell him, “Nope. Pick it back up!” He laughs at me, but I know that he appreciates me saying it every time I do! We have to keep moving forward steadily towards all of the potential that life has to offer!
Many of us have so much potential and power inside of us, and it simply takes for us to believe in that daily to push forward towards our goals, to embrace hope and potential within each day, and to pursue opportunities, friendships, and relationships that would allow us to be inspired, empowered, and fulfilled.

So go for it! Don’t you try to throw in the towel. Instead, live your life so that every day, you have a testimony to tell! Have a success mentality even in the midst of the storm. Live today like it’s part of your story of overcoming and winning even amidst the challenges that come your way! Live today like it’s part of the legacy that you might pass on to your mentees, the people around you, or your future family! You deserve to embrace all that life has to offer today and every day!

I believe in you!

We have to watch what we’re sowing: Creating a roadmap for personal and professional success

Years ago, I sat at a dinner table with fellow young professionals who were high-achievers, and we began to share about challenges that we had experienced throughout our respective journeys. People at that table spoke about such things as confidence challenges, family issues, loneliness, and even dealing with addiction or suicide when it came to family members or friends. Through all of this, these individuals managed to be doing great work within their communities and careers. That which was happening in their hearts and minds was impacting them, even as they were achieving. Something I came away from that conversation with, was that we need to watch what we’re sowing as we pursue our vision and goals, because often, we’re unconsciously reaping what we sow.

The bible says, “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully (2 Corinthians 9:6),” and I wholeheartedly believe that to be true. As someone who has always focused on both achieving and serving, when I was most experiencing challenges with confidence and fear, I wasn’t able to do my greatest work. I avoided speaking to wonderful people who intimidated me, I didn’t take advantage of certain opportunities, and I feared judgment. I was sowing fear and reaping missed opportunities. When I didn’t have a great handle on my direction, I didn’t accomplish as much. When I realized where I wanted to go in terms of my vision, I began sowing seeds of financial abundance, career progression, and entrepreneurship that all reaped greatly. And once I understood how to truly be organized and energized daily, things got even better in my life both personally and professionally.

What are you sowing?

Whatever your answer is, we all should continuously be working to push past personal and career challenges that might be preventing us from reaching our fullest potential.

There’s always so much more we can do to truly live out our greatness, and it is an honorable endeavor to take the time to identify what we need to live the lives we’ve dreamed of.

I challenge you to both identify and implement what you need to sow more of in your life, so that you can reap the fruit that comes from an empowering pursuit of your personal and professional vision.

Schedule “you” time and “dream” time this holiday season

Holiday vacation is right around the corner, and that means that my birthday just passed! It was December 2, and can I tell you, I had a blast, BUT I didn’t take enough time out to do things for me that day, and two weeks later, I’m still striving to make time to get a pedicure—something I do for myself just once or twice a year.

You see, I’m realizing that I need to schedule more “me” time into my calendar to be renewed and to fill my cup so that I can serve others from my overflow. For me, that means bike riding, making fresh tea, getting my nails done, full-blown dance sessions in the house, and watching the cooking channel occasionally among other things that make me feel refreshed. I’m guessing you might be able to use some more “me” time too.  I’m making a commitment to making more “me” time happen during the holiday season when things slow down a bit, and I’m hoping you make the same commitment. Why not go into 2018 feeling rested and relaxed?

Alternatively, if you’re feeling behind when it comes to laying the foundation for any dreams you might have—whether it’s a course you’ve fallen behind on, a business plan you have yet to complete, or a project you’ve been procrastinating on, make some “dream” time happen for yourself during this holiday break as well. I created my business plan, concept paper, budget, and goals for one of my businesses during one holiday season, simply by being strategic with my time.

While you’re in the mode of serving others and reflecting on the reason for the season, go ahead and schedule in some “you” time and some “dream” time if either or both of those things are important to you. For some of my readers, this holiday break presents a rare opportunity to have a true break, which makes it even more important to maximize this time to feel refreshed after the break has ended.

Whatever you decide to do with your time this season be intentional, be encouraged, be blessed, and be renewed. I’m sending many blessings your way this holiday season and beyond.

And remember, I believe in you!

What one accomplishment would make your 2017 amazing?

eric-rothermel-Planner

I can remember walking with an open laptop on my college campus as an undergrad, getting some last minute studying done right before an exam. A gentleman, who I believe was a professor, walked by me and told me, “If you don’t know it by now, you just won’t know it.” He then kept walking past me. He must have seen the intensity in my eyes and knew my test was right around the corner. But you know what? I kept studying, and I’m pretty sure I did well on that exam. I’m an awesome test taker, but I’m often the person who has my study book and notes out until the teacher or proctor says to put it away.  It’s because of my core belief that every moment counts–a belief I still apply to life and business. And when it comes to your 2017, there’s still time to end this year with a bang.

One of my clients inspired this post. She has health, financial, and other goals that she’s determined to meet before the end of 2017, and she’s on track to achieve themInstead of already delivering your final conclusions on 2017 already, why not do something you can really be proud of before December 31 comes.

I want you to do me a big favor. Please think of at least 1 goal that is realistic for you to accomplish over the next few weeks that would make you feel absolutely amazing about closing out 2017. Whether it’s about your physical health, self-care, finances, relationship, friendship, professional development, or something else, I want you to zoom in on that 1 goal. Then, I want you to think about the top 3 things you must do in order to make that goal happen. Then, create a timeline for implementation, schedule any associated action steps in your calendar, and make it happen!

If you really want to make your 2017 amazing, you definitely can, so hop to it 🙂 Be encouraged, and continue to be equipped for the greatness that is coming your way.

And remember, I believe in you!

When The Unexpected Happens… Encouragement To Keep On Going

I want to send encouragement your way, today. Over the past few weeks, I’ve spoken to a number of clients, friends, and colleagues that have had some heartbreaking things happen, negative health surprises come up, family issues arise, and more.  Some people are truly going through tough times, and if not you, maybe you know of your colleague or friend who might be experiencing some frustrating times. If this is you or someone you know, I wanted to send love, support, and encouragement your way.

During college, I was a mentor to many students. I was part of maybe 30 to 40 organizations total while I was there, and to continue mentoring, I started a massive Facebook group with my mentees soon after college. At one point, when I couldn’t sustain posting frequently to the group, I let my mentees know I was closing the group down. One of my mentees asked me what was the best and most powerful advice I could give as I was closing out the group. I said, “Always have your shield on. Be equipped with whatever spiritual strength, peace, strategies, heart, or whatever you need to battle against the problems that you don’t know will come in the future.”  I knew even then, in my early 20’s, that life would have some big challenges. Now at 33, I see that advice was so right to give. That mentee years later had a near-fatal scooter accident and lost most of his memory. He now has regained his memory, works in law as corporate counsel for a huge company, is married, and is doing well. I had my share of heartbreaks, frustrations, and challenging seasons too over the years, and I can remember crying profusely one day years ago. I was so confused as to where God wanted me after my employer had been fired and everyone was fired in my office except for me, who had 6 months to find another position. In the past, I thought I would be working at that job for years. Within the next one and a half years afterward, I had met the man who would be my husband, moved to another state, enrolled in life coaching certification, and started Daphne Valcin Coaching. God had a plan.

For some on this list, you may be dealing with other intense issues–I have had friends who had friends or family pass away this past week. One of my friends texted me this past week and said, “I just found out today that the company I work for is shutting down tomorrow.” Another friend didn’t get a job he really, really wanted and had been trying to look for another job for years now. These are all examples of truly difficult challenges, and while I made calls, had conversations, and sent encouragement to each of these friends, the common theme that each understood was, “This season too shall pass.” My friends each processed their challenges in a way where they thought through, “What is God showing me through this?” “What’s next?” “How can I find peace in the midst of this situation?”

I am not a licensed therapist, but I can tell you in my life experience that I think it’s healthy for you to think of some of those questions my friends asked themselves above as you experience challenges. Do take time to process what you’re experiencing and take time to grieve a situation, person, job, or anything else that might have you feeling loss or sadness. Then, determine, “What is God showing me through this? What’s next? How can I find peace in the midst of this situation,” and remember what I wrote about when it comes to having your shield. “How can I be equipped with whatever spiritual strength, peace, strategies, heart, or whatever I need to battle against the problems that I don’t know will come in the future, especially if I know challenges in certain areas of my life impact me greatly.”

Some very practical things you can do now to be prepared for whatever challenges come your way and to have peace in the midst of challenges to come:

1) Fill your mind and spirit with content that brings you peace

Whether it’s audio, T.V. shows, books, conferences or seminars that focus on spiritual strength, peace, personal development, coping skills, or perseverance, immerse yourself in content regularly that feeds your mind and spirit, even if you do this quarterly within the year. This way, you shift your internal dialogue and are equipped to bounce back and be a strong support to others.

2) Pray/meditate daily

An article that I read cited that five research-based results of prayer are increased trust; self-control improvement; increased kindness; increased forgiveness; and decreased effects of stress. Take time to connect with your internal thoughts, a higher power, positive possibilities, and gratefulness daily.

3) Process your thoughts or deep feelings that might be keeping you down

Whether you choose to seek therapy, or find that journaling your thoughts helps you to process them, or become part of a support circle associated with a challenge or common interests, do seek a platform or multiple platforms where you can process your thoughts, be encouraged, and feel equipped to move forward.

I felt this post was just what some of you needed me to write this week, and so I truly hope it’s helpful as you continue to walk through your respective journeys. Be encouraged, and continue to be equipped for the greatness that is coming your way.

And remember, I believe in you!

Three reasons to get focused in the midst of distractions

If you are like me, then these past few weeks have been a bit trying. There is so much going on in our society and also in our personal or professional lives that seem to demand our attention. And quite frankly, when it comes to what’s happening in our country, it is my belief that you have the right to stay informed or take action to advocate for what’s right. In situations where personal or professional challenges are demanding our attention, it’s also important to work towards resolving those challenges. Though, where I believe we should all work to make a shift, is ensuring that we are walking in our purpose and prioritizing those things that are most meaningful to us in this season in our lives, even in the midst of everything else going on.

I want you to know that when you want your vision bad enough, or if your “why” for your vision is big enough, then you have to stay focused.

Here are three reasons to get focused even in the midst of distractions:

1) Your legacy depends on it

Whether you hope to leave a legacy at work; or you have children and hope for them to someday admire your story; or you simply want to ensure that when you’re gone, that the dash was awesome (as in 1965 – ___ ), you should be consistently working on determining what your legacy will be, ensuring that you are living life on purpose.

A possible solution: Create a list of the top 5 – 10 distractions that are pulling you away from your legacy and purpose and then create a second list with strategies to limit each distraction on your first list. For example, if hours of social media are preventing you from being able to invest in building your career, entrepreneurial idea, or financial strategies to pay off debt to leave a legacy for your children, then you might need to put a cap on daily social media intake.

2) Your distractions are possibly impacting your mindset

Research continues to show that social media and who we allow in our circles impact who we are and how we are. Ask yourself the questions: “Who do I want to be?” “How do I want to be?” “Who am I?” If who or what you’re dedicating your time to isn’t matching up with the answers to those questions, then you need to adjust. Your mindset is critical to your success and peace.

If your mindset is negatively being affected by people, places, thoughts, or actions, that could be the reason why you’re not thriving as much as you’d like to spiritually, emotionally, relationally, or professionally.

Some possible solutions: List your vision for who you want to be spiritually, financially, relationally, and character-wise in short bullet points somewhere that’s visible to you. Daily, refer to that vision in the morning and evening.

Additionally, at the beginning of the day, in prayer or through stating affirmations out loud, vocalize what you hope to exude that day. Write that down. At the end of the day, review what you wrote down, and check your intentions for the day with what you actually gave your time and attention to. If they don’t line up, chances are, your way of being and environment may not be in alignment with who you aspire to be. If that’s the case, determine one action you need to take to get in alignment for the next day, write that down, and use the next day to work on that action. Little by little, daily, you would end up taking one significant action to work towards making sure your life is in alignment with your vision of who you are and who you aspire to be.

3) Time is precious

We all have a limited time on this earth. And every moment is precious. I keep being reminded of the fragility of life whether that be for our own lives or the lives of those around us. You can spend your time fighting for a cause you believe in if that’s what you feel you should be doing, or focusing greatly on your family, or reading novels that excite you, or serving in communities that need you the most, or binge-watching movies that make your heart flutter, or in starting your own business, or in personal development. Your options are endless. And, the truth is, you do have a choice in deciding where you choose to spend your time. You have to be honest with yourself in determining what the best use of your time is for what you want out of life. The important thing is to remember it is your choice and to not allow things to take your attention that you feel are not worth your time or energy.

A possible solution: Take some time and develop a list of your top 5 priorities for how you spend time in different areas of your life like social life; time at work; family; personal development; relationship; friendships; health, etc. Be sure that however you’re spending time daily aligns with what you would feel most proud of in the future. For one person, the ability to take naps, meditate, and watch a movie after work is essential and meaningful. For another person, working on a book and business while making one call to a loved one during that same after-work time-frame might be most meaningful. Be clear on what making good use of time and living your life like it’s golden means to you.

I am hoping that some of the strategies above resonate with you and that you’re able to implement at least one thing that will help you to stay focused on your vision and goals even in the midst of distractions.

Feel free to comment below or email me at daphne@daphnevalcin.com and let me know if this was helpful, and of course, feel free to forward to any family or friends who you think this might be useful for. As always, I believe in you!

One of The Greatest Gifts You Could Give Yourself – Motivation For The Month!

giftroberto-nickson

One of the greatest gifts that  you can give yourself during this season in your life is permission to live your fullest life. Give yourself permission to be your best self, to follow your dreams, and to daily live a purpose-driven life.

If you’re playing small, it’s time you realized that the world and the people around you are waiting for you to realize your full potential.  The time is now, and the sooner you start, the sooner you might reap the rewards of expressing externally who you know you are internally.

Family, friends, significant others, co-workers, colleagues, and strangers alike should all be affected by the results of your leap of faith.

You’ll realize that your choosing to play big literally impacts the world around you.

In the next few weeks, I urge you to give yourself permission to be your best self. Think of practical action steps that you can take daily that will enable you to live your fullest life, move forward to implement those steps, and reap the rewards of your faith and action.

I believe in you!

As always, please comment below or email me at daphne@daphnevalcin.com if this resonated with you, and feel free to share this post with family and friends!

Stop and Smell the Roses – Motivation for the Month!

c8b8e91b-5360-467b-b718-25c20d4e7e32.jpgStop and smell the roses!

When was the last time you stopped and simply appreciated where you are amidst the hustle and bustle of life?

In my observations of those individuals who have experienced vast success personally, professionally, or entrepreneurially, one thing many of them have in common is that they have a daily practice of expressing gratitude for what they have, even at their lowest points.

If you’re lacking motivation for small or large tasks or goals, one amazing, powerful practice that can take your action to the next level is expressing gratitude.

Last year, I found out that there are actually “Gratitude Trainings” that exist that cost hundreds of dollars. These trainings teach people how to feel, show, and express gratitude in a more powerful way. I personally know individuals who have attended and have had their lives completely changed, experiencing greater abundance in every way after that training. Gratitude is that priceless.

In the next few weeks, I urge you to try a few ways to express gratitude daily. Here are a few ways you can try to do so:

  • Create and state five affirmations that state, in present tense, what you’re grateful for now and in the future
  • Create a blessing jar where you add in what you’re grateful for at the end of each day through writing a statement of gratitude on a small sheet of paper daily
  • Meditate or pray on 10 things that you’re grateful for soon after you awake daily

Determine what works for you, experience the benefits of taking your gratitude to the next level, and make whatever practice you choose to express gratitude consistent!

I believe in you!

As always, please send me a note if this resonated with you, and feel free to share this post with family and friends!

Also, feel free to share with me via email at daphne@daphnevalcin.com how this post has helped you think of what you are already grateful for in your life or business! I’m excited to hear about it!

Push past fear! – Motivation for the Month!

antonreopponenparachute2

Push past fear!

Have you been there? You’re on the brink of making a decision, having a conversation, taking action towards a goal, or doing something amazing, and BAM, fear comes in and puts a major stop on progress.

It’s time for you to replace fear with faith, courage, and action. Remember, action conquers fear. You might have some relationships that need mending. Mend them. You may have a conversation that needs to happen with an employer or fellow employee. Have it. You may have the desire to travel. Go for it. It may be that you have a dream or vision that has been on your heart. Make it happen.

In order to move forward when fear is on your heart or mind, thinking about what’s on the other side of your next action step can help to push you forward.

This month, spend some time really thinking through the details of what life would look like if you pushed past fear, think of how you can strategically move forward in a way that has the best possible outcomes, get counsel if needed on how to move forward, and then take action!

I believe in you!
