A Few of the Myths and Realities of Entrepreneurship (From My Perspective!)

Entrepreneurship has been such a blessing to me, even as others still believe it always turns out badly.

Some believe that being an entrepreneur is the wrong move to make because:

  • You’ll mess up your credit score.
  • You won’t be able to make big purchases, like purchasing a home or car.
  • You won’t be able to afford health insurance.
  • You won’t be able to provide for your family.
  • You’ll waste the educational credentials that you spent so much time and energy getting.

I’ve actually found the opposite to be true for me. I’ve strived to be strategic, disciplined, and consistent throughout the 4 years that I’ve been a Leadership and Business Coach, and in full transparency:

✔ My credit score has remained consistently above 800.

✔ We have two homes and are looking to purchase our 3rd property by early next year. My over $40k in student loans is completely paid off.

✔ I’ve been able to afford health insurance or healthcare since I started my business.

✔ I work 20 – 25 hours a week, and had my revenues hit double my husband’s income this year. My two small children stay home with me even as I work with a nanny we’ve hired to watch them.

✔ I have two degrees, including one from an Ivy League University along with certifications in group facilitation and Life Coaching. I totally don’t think any of it was a waste of time, though I also believe we all have different educational paths and we all have value no matter what that educational path looked like. For me, the network and mastery I’ve gained through the schools I attended have added value to those I serve and has allowed me to serve many colleagues I’ve met while obtaining those degrees!

✔ And above all, though entrepreneurship has its challenges, I really and truly love what I do every day, I love my clients, and I’m truly blessed!

If you’re willing to be strategic, disciplined, and consistent, the sky is the limit for you personally, professionally, and entrepreneurially.

And I’m on a mission to share the wealth of knowledge I’ve gained with other entrepreneurs looking to thrive in 2019.

Can you really handle success? Three tips to manage the success that’s coming your way.

atikh-bana-Black Woman Happy

First of all, I’m going to tell you the answer is YES. You definitely can handle success. So many people are afraid to do so much, because they’re afraid of what might be on the other side, even if it’s success. Some of us are afraid to graduate from high school or from college. We’re afraid to date the right man or woman.  We’re afraid to get married. We’re afraid to start a job in a higher role than we’ve been in. We’re afraid to make too much money. We’re afraid to move to where we know would be great for us.  We’re afraid to save money. We’re afraid to buy a home. And the list goes on and on. But, can I tell you something. It’s okay to be afraid, but it’s important that you know that you can handle the success that’s on the other side of taking action towards walking in your purpose.

These past few weeks, I have had the blessing of speaking with business coaching clients who are almost overwhelmed with how many increased leads, sales, and profits they are making. We’re working on how they can manage that better. I’ve had the joy of supporting leadership coaching clients who now have friendships galore blossoming from their ability to more walk in their confidence and coaching clients who are also balancing blossoming romantic relationships along with their other endeavors as a result of their taking a chance on love. I actually closed the most sales I have ever closed in the history of my business last month. Great things are happening all around, but I definitely realized something in helping others manage their success and having to manage my own success.

I realized that being able to handle success means being as prepared as possible for it before it comes.

Though this means different things to different people based on what your idea of success is, there are a few things that are pretty consistent across the board that you can do to do your part to be ready for the awesomeness that might be getting ready to come your way.

1) Time Management

Are you managing your personal time or business time in a way that makes room for when success comes your way? Whether success to you means a relationship, or exercising regularly, or having increased prospects in your business, does your current schedule allow for space for future endeavors that are meaningful to you to be prioritized? If not, adjust your schedule, utilize time management tools, release what’s not an effective use of your time, and integrate more of what helps you move towards being successful.

2) Personal and Professional Development

When you get the increase in pay or the new house or the new relationship or the increased clientele, will you know what to do? Will you know how to manage your success? When I was in high school, I was speaking to bankers about understanding investing. When I was in college, I requested information about franchises I might start (though I may have had $5 in my savings account). In college, I printed out a large number of pages about credit management before I had a credit card. I was trying to get prepared for what my future vision might hold. If you’re trying to start a family or have an amazing family, you should be taking steps to grow as a parent, wife, or husband, for example. Lay the foundation right now for what you know can be your reality. Why wait?

3) Perspective

Are you a pessimist? In my opinion, that’s not going to help very much in your personal, professional, or entrepreneurial life. And there’s a difference between being a realist or a pessimist. To prepare for success, once you’re in it, you have to learn how to keep success going. That means you have to have vision, hope, and I would say, even faith, to keep pushing you forward. If you got to medical school and decided once you got there that you weren’t medical school material, can you imagine how that might negatively impact your ability to study through the night? If you got married and, all of a sudden, decided that this marriage was just not going to work no matter what you did, can you imagine how that might impact your marriage journey. So again, vision, hope, and faith, I believe, might be essential on the way to success and once you reach the success you’ve been hoping for.

So do yourself a big favor. Since we already agree you’re going to be able to handle any success that comes your way, do your part to continue to prepare to receive it. You got this!

And remember, I believe in you!

Three reasons to get focused in the midst of distractions

If you are like me, then these past few weeks have been a bit trying. There is so much going on in our society and also in our personal or professional lives that seem to demand our attention. And quite frankly, when it comes to what’s happening in our country, it is my belief that you have the right to stay informed or take action to advocate for what’s right. In situations where personal or professional challenges are demanding our attention, it’s also important to work towards resolving those challenges. Though, where I believe we should all work to make a shift, is ensuring that we are walking in our purpose and prioritizing those things that are most meaningful to us in this season in our lives, even in the midst of everything else going on.

I want you to know that when you want your vision bad enough, or if your “why” for your vision is big enough, then you have to stay focused.

Here are three reasons to get focused even in the midst of distractions:

1) Your legacy depends on it

Whether you hope to leave a legacy at work; or you have children and hope for them to someday admire your story; or you simply want to ensure that when you’re gone, that the dash was awesome (as in 1965 – ___ ), you should be consistently working on determining what your legacy will be, ensuring that you are living life on purpose.

A possible solution: Create a list of the top 5 – 10 distractions that are pulling you away from your legacy and purpose and then create a second list with strategies to limit each distraction on your first list. For example, if hours of social media are preventing you from being able to invest in building your career, entrepreneurial idea, or financial strategies to pay off debt to leave a legacy for your children, then you might need to put a cap on daily social media intake.

2) Your distractions are possibly impacting your mindset

Research continues to show that social media and who we allow in our circles impact who we are and how we are. Ask yourself the questions: “Who do I want to be?” “How do I want to be?” “Who am I?” If who or what you’re dedicating your time to isn’t matching up with the answers to those questions, then you need to adjust. Your mindset is critical to your success and peace.

If your mindset is negatively being affected by people, places, thoughts, or actions, that could be the reason why you’re not thriving as much as you’d like to spiritually, emotionally, relationally, or professionally.

Some possible solutions: List your vision for who you want to be spiritually, financially, relationally, and character-wise in short bullet points somewhere that’s visible to you. Daily, refer to that vision in the morning and evening.

Additionally, at the beginning of the day, in prayer or through stating affirmations out loud, vocalize what you hope to exude that day. Write that down. At the end of the day, review what you wrote down, and check your intentions for the day with what you actually gave your time and attention to. If they don’t line up, chances are, your way of being and environment may not be in alignment with who you aspire to be. If that’s the case, determine one action you need to take to get in alignment for the next day, write that down, and use the next day to work on that action. Little by little, daily, you would end up taking one significant action to work towards making sure your life is in alignment with your vision of who you are and who you aspire to be.

3) Time is precious

We all have a limited time on this earth. And every moment is precious. I keep being reminded of the fragility of life whether that be for our own lives or the lives of those around us. You can spend your time fighting for a cause you believe in if that’s what you feel you should be doing, or focusing greatly on your family, or reading novels that excite you, or serving in communities that need you the most, or binge-watching movies that make your heart flutter, or in starting your own business, or in personal development. Your options are endless. And, the truth is, you do have a choice in deciding where you choose to spend your time. You have to be honest with yourself in determining what the best use of your time is for what you want out of life. The important thing is to remember it is your choice and to not allow things to take your attention that you feel are not worth your time or energy.

A possible solution: Take some time and develop a list of your top 5 priorities for how you spend time in different areas of your life like social life; time at work; family; personal development; relationship; friendships; health, etc. Be sure that however you’re spending time daily aligns with what you would feel most proud of in the future. For one person, the ability to take naps, meditate, and watch a movie after work is essential and meaningful. For another person, working on a book and business while making one call to a loved one during that same after-work time-frame might be most meaningful. Be clear on what making good use of time and living your life like it’s golden means to you.

I am hoping that some of the strategies above resonate with you and that you’re able to implement at least one thing that will help you to stay focused on your vision and goals even in the midst of distractions.

One of The Greatest Gifts You Could Give Yourself – Motivation For The Month!

One of the greatest gifts that  you can give yourself during this season in your life is permission to live your fullest life. Give yourself permission to be your best self, to follow your dreams, and to daily live a purpose-driven life.

If you’re playing small, it’s time you realized that the world and the people around you are waiting for you to realize your full potential.  The time is now, and the sooner you start, the sooner you might reap the rewards of expressing externally who you know you are internally.

Family, friends, significant others, co-workers, colleagues, and strangers alike should all be affected by the results of your leap of faith.

You’ll realize that your choosing to play big literally impacts the world around you.

In the next few weeks, I urge you to give yourself permission to be your best self. Think of practical action steps that you can take daily that will enable you to live your fullest life, move forward to implement those steps, and reap the rewards of your faith and action.

I believe in you!

Push past fear! – Motivation for the Month!

Push past fear!

Have you been there? You’re on the brink of making a decision, having a conversation, taking action towards a goal, or doing something amazing, and BAM, fear comes in and puts a major stop on progress.

It’s time for you to replace fear with faith, courage, and action. Remember, action conquers fear. You might have some relationships that need mending. Mend them. You may have a conversation that needs to happen with an employer or fellow employee. Have it. You may have the desire to travel. Go for it. It may be that you have a dream or vision that has been on your heart. Make it happen.

In order to move forward when fear is on your heart or mind, thinking about what’s on the other side of your next action step can help to push you forward.

This month, spend some time really thinking through the details of what life would look like if you pushed past fear, think of how you can strategically move forward in a way that has the best possible outcomes, get counsel if needed on how to move forward, and then take action!

I believe in you!

Limit your time spent on what’s not important! – Motivation for the Month!

One of my mentors once told me that when it comes to time management, “I’ve learned that there’s a difference between doing a good thing and a God thing.” What I believe she was saying is that while we often have good intentions in what we are doing with our time, if it’s not honoring our family, ourself, our balance, our peace, and our spiritual connection, it may not be the right thing to be doing at this time.

We have a limited amount of time daily….What would your life look like if you used your time wisely?

This month, create an action plan for using your time daily in a way that honors what is most important to you. What do you need to stop doing? What do you need to start doing? What must you let go to thrive?

Use your favorite online calendar application or a printout of a weekly schedule to write, in detail, what your perfect week would like like if you used your time wisely.

Then, get to work at changing things, so that your time serves you and your purpose daily!

I believe in you!

Develop an action plan for the rest of your 2016! – Motivation For The Month!

Develop an action plan for the rest of your 2016!

We’re almost halfway done with 2016, and it’s not too late to ensure that you have a phenomenal year. If something has not been working for you this year, fix it! And if there are goals and dreams you have yet to pursue, pursue them!

I know what you’re thinking….If only it were that easy.

With an action plan, you can conquer much more than you may have thought was possible.

This is why I shared with my subscribers last year how to do a self-led quarterly evaluation, and why I’m bringing it back!

Below, check out some steps that I believe you should take regularly to pause, reflect, and strategize around how to powerfully pursue your goals.

  1. Find a quiet place for you to do this activity alone or with a trusted group of friends. You can also play music that helps you to reflect while doing the activity.
  2. Get 3 – 5 sheets of notebook paper (feel free to use a journal, Google Document, or whatever works for you as an alternative).
  3. At the top of each notebook sheet, write 1 of your top priorities in life and/or business (examples are 1) forming healthy friendships, 2) establishing a stronger spiritual relationship, 3) eating healthy, and 4) increasing clientele).
  4. Write “Current” as a heading underneath your first priority.
  5. Underneath that heading, write 3 – 5 short statements that describe where you are in this priority area.
  6. Underneath those statements, rank yourself in this priority area on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being exactly where you want to be.
  7. Underneath that, write the heading, “3 months from now.”
  8. Underneath that heading, write 3 – 5 short statements that describe where you would like to be in this priority area 3 months from now.
  9. Underneath those statements, write the heading, “Action Plan.”
  10. Underneath that heading, write 3 – 5 very feasible things you can do to move towards where you want to be in that area.
  11. Repeat steps 3 – 10 on each notebook sheet or page for each priority. If you are with a group of friends, you can each share one goal at a time, give listeners an opportunity to ask questions at the end of each goal, and clap it up for the presenter after each goal.
  12. Determine how you will hold yourself accountable to implementing the action steps that you determined will bring you closer to your goals. Ensure that those accountability measures are based on your knowledge of what works and doesn’t work for you when it comes to accountability.
  13. Schedule your self-led quarterly evaluations for the remainder of the year using Google Calendar or whatever planning mechanisms you use including reminders to help you prepare to reflect leading up to your next evaluation.

Take some time to really focus on the areas of your life that mean the most to you and take steps like the ones above to reflect then strategize around how to take your goals to the next level. Ensure that while you’re at it, you’re determining how to hold yourself accountable to these action steps. If you do, then you WILL see much more progress than if you allow yourself to get used to operating at levels below what you know you are capable of!

Try it for yourself, modifying if needed, and tell me how it works for you!

I believe in you!

As always, please send me a note at daphne@daphnevalcin.com if this resonated with you, and feel free to share this post with family and friends!
Also, feel free to share with me via email how your own quarterly self-led evaluation goes! I’m excited to hear about it!

Your dreams are in reach! – Motivation for the Month!

Your dreams are in reach!

It has often been said that there are six degrees of separation between everyone in the world.

That means, you most likely have someone in your inner circle or someone who is somehow connected to your inner circle who has what you need to achieve your dream.

Remember that.

That means, whatever you need can be a phone call (or two or three) away. Through a phone call or introduction, a stellar financial planner, a successful author, an inspiring motivational speaker, a mentor, an encourager, a spiritual guide, a great reference for a job or educational endeavor, a lawyer, a doctor, a successful actor — whomever or whatever you need — is probably closer than you think.

We often feel like success is so distant, when we have a choice to bring it closer. We have a choice to access those who have traveled a path we have yet to travel. We have a choice to find the resources we need online, within our communities, or in other sources to make our dreams come true. We have a choice to have a mindset where attaining the resources that we need to move forward on a dream or a goal is not an option.

Make that choice a reality. Take action, today.

Take time this month to DETERMINE WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL, FIND OUT HOW TO GET IT, and TAKE ACTION towards your dreams and goals!

And once you’ve started moving forward, keep up the momentum!

Determine what step you will take today, what time-frame you will take it in, and what you need to do to implement that step. Then, continue that forward movement towards your dreams and goals!

I believe in you!

As always, please send me a note at daphne@daphnevalcin.com if this resonated with you, and feel free to share this post with family and friends!

Also, feel free to share with me via email what resources you will start to pursue today to move forward on your dream or goal! I’m excited to hear about it!

See beyond the horizon! – Motivation for the Month!

See beyond the horizon!

Can you believe it’s already November? And of course, you probably think I’ll be writing about why it’s so important to be grateful for where you are right now, but in addition to that, I want you to be grateful for the awesomeness that is just beyond the horizon if you keep pushing towards your goals!

Maybe you’ve had an entrepreneurial or personal vision that you’ve had for months or years, and you don’t see it coming to fruition like you hoped it would. I want you to envision your goal coming to fruition little by little.

your vision?

Maybe your vision is to see yourself in that loving relationship you seek or having that critical conversation with a family member or colleague at work. Maybe your vision is to see clients and profits steadily coming into your business. Maybe your vision is a vision of you speaking to a crowd of people who want to hear your message!

One of my business mentors encourages me to write a check every 90 days for the revenue I hope to receive in my business at the end of the next 90 days. Jim Carrey wrote a $10 million dollar check to himself when he was at a very low financial point as a struggling comic. Years later, he easily surpassed that $10 million dollar goal. I regularly take time to visualize exactly how it would look for me to experience the greatest success in my business. Before I visualize, I think to myself, “What would I see, feel, and hear in my vision?”

Take time this month to regularly see yourself beyond the horizon.

I’m EXCITED about the GREATNESS beyond your horizon!

Be fearless and faithFULL this month and beyond. Continue to take the action steps that will serve you, your family, and/or the community around you to strive for what’s beyond your own horizon.

This month, as you’re working towards your goals, think of, not only what you’re grateful for now, but be grateful for your future, for I know your horizon can truly be beautiful…if only you believe and take decisive, consistent action towards that truly beautiful vision.

As always, please comment below or send me a note at daphne@daphnevalcin.com if this resonated with you, and feel free to share this post with family and friends!
